And the pro-Ukrainian esprit of the early days always had a cynical undertone; I can’t be persuaded that the Washington or London establishment ever gave a solitary damn about Ukrainian civilians if the prospect of bogging Russia down in a costly war was on the table. One can be forthright about this without adopting the monstrous perspective of the Max Blumenthals of the world
