The first ever "coup d'état" against France's First Republic succeeded, and the second against the Second Republic also succeeded, but all the coups d'état against France's Third Republic failed (unless you count 1940). Here in the U.S. our first coup d'état seems to have temporarily failed, but remains a threat. For the United States to put a final end to our first coup d'état, I think it will help to know the French history that John Ganz gives us here. It would certainly help if we knew that the political form that coups threaten is the Republic, and that coups against republics are sometimes abetted by democracy. (4Aug2022)
